Van Conversion Layout
The interior of this Mercedes Sprinter LWB is just shy of 5 metres long, and has a thoughtful floor plan that makes the most of every inch!
The main areas include a well-equipped kitchen, a versatile lounge area, a comfy sleeping space, and a cleverly integrated corner shower room. The living space flows seamlessly, promoting an airy and open feel while maintaining distinct zones for cooking, dining, relaxing, and sleeping.
A woodburner situated near the seating area provides warmth and a homely ambiance, perfect for chilly evenings.
While the kitchen isn’t large, it features a concealed sink that optimises prep space and helps to maintain the clean lines of the countertop.
Adjacent to the kitchen, the cube-style dining set serves as a multipurpose area for dining or working. A sofa bench offers additional seating and lounging options, converting the space into a social hub.
The main sleeping area is defined by a fixed bed. Below the bed, a spacious garage accommodates larger items and adventure gear.
Around the van, various storage solutions are cleverly placed to maximise the use of space without cluttering the living areas.
Key features:
↠ Woodburner
↠ Corner shower room with removable toilet
↠ Cube-style dining set
↠ Spacious kitchen with concealed sink
↠ Sofa bench
↠ Fixed bed
↠ Spacious garage
↠ Variety of storage solutions
The team at The Hills Campers has chosen to retain the full bulkhead separating the cab from the living space, enhancing thermal management—a crucial consideration for van life in Scotland, where Luss is based.
While some may prefer a hatch or open access for convenience, the benefits of this design in temperature control are significant.
Helen, the founder of Vanlife Hub, shares a similar setup in her VW Crafter camper, which has a small ‘escape hatch’. Despite the option, she’s found no need to use it for ‘escape’ purposes in her three years of vanlife, appreciating the insulation benefits this approach provides instead.
Seating & Sleeping
Luss offers a beautifully crafted area for seating and sleeping that exemplifies how comfort, versatility, and functionality can be seamlessly integrated into a compact space.
At the heart of this campervan’s living area is a cube-style dining set, which not only provides a dedicated space for meals and socialising but also enhances the overall usability of the interior. This dining area is cleverly designed for functionality without compromising the living area’s aesthetic appeal.
Adjacent to the dining area is a sofa bench that offers additional seating during the day. This bench, measuring 180cm in length and 60cm in width, is not just a seating option but also converts into a comfortable sleeping space for one, showcasing the van’s adaptability.
The design of the sofa bench is such that it remains accessible and functional without the need to be stowed away during daytime activities, making it ideal for a small family or an additional guest.
The fixed bed positioned at the rear of the van is 175cm long and 140cm wide, comfortably sleeping two.
Key features:
↠ Cube-style dining set
↠ Sofa bench (sleeps 1780mm long and 600mm wide)
↠ Fixed bed (sleeps 2, 1780mm long and 1350mm wide)

The innovative layout of Luss accommodates sleeping for three comfortably, thanks to the strategic placement of the sofa bench alongside the fixed rear bed. This arrangement not only serves as a great lounge space during the day but also provides extra sleeping space at night, all without the need for additional setup or storage.
This design is particularly beneficial for small families, offering both functionality and comfort without sacrificing the van’s open feel and aesthetic charm.
Plumbing & Bathroom
The bathroom in Luss is cleverly designed to offer all the comforts of a modern home.
Located in the front corner, this alone helps to maintain the feeling of openness within the van. This strategic positioning contrasts with setups in other campers we’ve toured – such as this Mercedes Sprinter conversion by Brown Bird & Co – where the centrally-located full-height shower creates a sense of division within the space.
The aesthetics of the bathroom are clean and minimalistic, with PVC cladding on the shower room walls providing a sleek and waterproof finish. The design is complemented by subtle green hues that resonate with the van’s nature-inspired theme.
The thermostatic shower ensures a consistent water temperature, adding a touch of luxury to the compact bathroom.
Key features:
↠ Shower room with tray and shower curtain
↠ PVC Cladding to shower room walls
↠ Thermostatic shower
↠ Removable Thetford 165 PortaPotti toilet
↠ 80 litre fresh water tank
↠ Shurflo pump and accumulator tank
This layout is a signature design from The Hills Campers. Each aspect of the bathroom, from the shower palette to the finishes, is configurable, allowing each conversion to be personalised.

Off-Grid Capability
Luss exemplifies sustainable living on the go with its advanced off-grid power setup, designed to ensure autonomy while exploring the wilderness.
At the heart of this system are the 300W solar panels coupled with an MPPT solar controller, which maximises energy efficiency by converting sunlight into usable power, even under varying weather conditions.
The 200Ah Renogy lithium battery stores this energy, while the 2000W Renogy inverter allows for the use of household appliances without the need for external power sources. A Renogy DC-DC charger further ensures that the battery is efficiently charged while driving.
A standout feature in Luss’s energy management is the Sargent System Control Management. It’s the first time we’ve seen this particular system in a van build; it offers a centralised interface for monitoring and controlling all the electrical systems.
The off-grid set-up is further enhanced by a 25 litre Autogas LPG tank, a 240V hook-up with sockets, and multiple USB ports to meet all power needs.
