Mercedes Sprinter Camper Interior
When you’re converting such a rugged, robust van, it’s tempting to take that exterior style through to the interior design – similar to the rich aesthetic in this 4×4 Sprinter conversion – The Isles.
However, the blend of rich, warm wood accents with sleek, white cabinetry, and matte black fixtures in this camper conversion creates a dynamic interplay of light and dark.
We’re into it.

Race Van Conversion Layout
This is an open bulkhead conversion, so moving from front to back, we’ve got the classic front swivel seats (2) with removable swivel table, and bench-style seating. Then there’s a spacious kitchen, with countertop extension, and shower room with toilet. The bed is an extra large north-to-south fixed design, with extra-height to allow for that race van essential: the spacious garage storage.
Key features:
↠ Front swivel seats (2).
↠ Removable swivel table.
↠ Side-on bench seating.
↠ Spacious kitchen with countertop extension.
↠ Shower room with fixed cassette toilet.
↠ Fixed rear bed, longitudinal.
↠ Rear garage with Thule bike storage.
Seating & Sleeping
The seating and sleeping arrangements in this Mercedes-Benz van create a comfortable living space.
With two single cab swivel seats and a removable table, along with lounge area bench seating (that also accesses the table), the living area is perfect for dining and chilling out.
The large fixed north-to-south bed at the back has been elevated to create ample garage storage beneath. A smart set of built-in steps ensures easy access to the raised bed.
This clean seating/sleeping layout truly enhances the overall functionality of the van.
Key features:
↠ Single cab swivel seats (2).
↠ Bench-style lounge area seating.
↠ Fixed bed with garage beneath and built-in steps.
↠ Therma-lite premium mattress.
To ensure a comfortable sleeping area and to enhance privacy, all windows have integrated blinds, and there is an insulating blackout curtain between the cab and the interior.

Plumbing & Bathroom
This racevan features a full wet room with shower and toilet. The design is spacious, contained, and easy to clean.
Notably, this is the first time we’ve featured a Thetford C402 RV Cassette Toilet in a conversion. This super-efficient design, incorporates its own bench, water tank and waste cassette, and is available with a combined shower tray. All you have to do is build the enclosure, wire it for power, and leave room for the access hatch (either inside the van – as in this case – or on the exterior of the van) to get to the removable cassette.
Key features:
↠ Thetford C402 RV cassette toilet.
↠ Retractable Nautilus shower door.
↠ Truma Combi Boiler & Space Heater.
↠ Heated, insulated baffled underslung fresh and waste tanks.
With adventure at the heart of this design, the heated, insulated water tanks provide excellent freeze protection and temperature regulation, ensuring reliable water supply in all seasons.
Additionally, the baffled water tanks have pre-moulded internal walls to help control the movement of water in the tank – this prevents the water from moving excessively when being transported, which can cause an unsteady load.

Storage
In this sporthome conversion, there’s plenty of interior space and every inch has been meticulously optimised for storage.
Overhead cabinetry maximises vertical space, providing ample room for all your essentials. Of particular note is the slimline overhead cabinet above the side door, a fairly unique feature in this build, and the over-cab storage has plenty of space, too.
Not only does the storage make the most of the available space, but there are also other thoughtful details, such as the bedside corner shelves with built-in glass holders for your drink.
But all of this goes without mentioning the all-important full-width, raised height garage – vital in any adventure van! Home to a Thule Veloslide bike rack / storage system (slides out for easy access), a hardwearing floor, and aluminium chequer plate lining, the finish on this oft-overlooked area is pretty luxurious.
Key features:
↠ Overhead cabinets (cab, sidedoor, kitchen, lounge, and bedroom)
↠ Bedside shelves with drink holders.
↠ Box seating storage.
↠ Storage over the cab.

FAQs About the Mercedes Sprinter Race Van
What are race vans and sporthomes?
Race vans and sporthomes, often referred to as race cruiser conversions, are specialised motorhomes designed for active lifestyles and outdoor sports.
These campervans typically include a rear garage area for storing and transporting sports equipment, such as motorcross bikes or mountain biking gear. They combine the comforts of traditional campervans with the practicality needed for adventure sports, making them ideal for both travel and racing events.
How much does a race van conversion like this cost?
The price for long wheelbase conversions at Racespace Sport Homes start at £25,595 + VAT, excluding the base van (June 2024).
All their adventure motorhome conversions can be customised to various specifications, and this conversion has a range of optional extras included.
If you’re interested in adventure van conversions, get in touch with the team at Racespace to discuss design options and what you’d like to prioritise. You’ll get the benefit of their expertise and they’ll guide you through their conversion process to personalise your build.
How much did this van weigh?
This van came very close to 3.5 tonnes so, when loaded with passengers or belongings, would exceed the UK weight limit. Hence, the decision was taken to to up-plate the vehicle. By up-plating, the maximum allowable weight was increased to 4.2 tonnes.
While the process of up-plating is not particularly difficult, it does have a significant consideration: to drive a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes in the UK, you need a C1 license. If you don’t already have this license, you will need to take an additional driving test to be able to drive a van like this one that has been up-plated to 4.2 tonnes.
What are the benefits of a self-levelling system for motorhomes and campervans?
This is the first luxury motorhome we’ve seen with a self-levelling system. The system offers several key benefits…
Stability and Comfort: Ensures the campervan remains stable and level on uneven terrain, enhancing comfort and safety while parked.
Ease of Use: Automatically levels the camper at the push of a button, saving time and effort compared to manual leveling methods.
Enhanced Sleep Quality: Provides a level sleeping surface, improving sleep quality and overall comfort during overnight stays.
Reduced Wear and Tear: Minimises strain on the camper’s chassis and structure by evenly distributing weight, reducing wear and tear over time.
Overall, this system significantly enhances the convenience, comfort, and longevity of the campervan, making it a valuable upgrade for any serious traveller.
What alternatives are there to Sprinters for campervan conversion?
Conversions using Mercedes Sprinters as the base van are the most desirable in vanlife circles, but the Ford Transit, VW Crafter, and MAN TGE are all good options with high roof, long wheelbase vans available.
Additionally, Citroen Relays, Peugeot Boxers, and Fiat Ducatos – or in the US the Ram Promasters – are also highly affordable alternatives. While these vans may not share the same curves and prestige as Mercedes Sprinters, their boxier shape makes them faster to convert, their price tag makes them easier on the bank account, and their lighter weight allows more scope for conversion (possibly avoiding up-plating).
