Historically, a ‘Munro’ is a Scottish mountain over 3,000 feet (914 meters) high, and ‘bagging’ one means reaching its summit. However, this Munro requires far less effort to claim. You could win an exquisitely designed Brown Bird camper, for just the price of a ticket. Find out more…

Surprised to see that Munro isn’t a 4×4 Sprinter campervan?

Yes, so were we.

Her height is thanks to a boost, created by 5 Tonne Leaf Springs to the front and back. These give her an extra lift, and the appearance of a premium 4×4.

Mercedes Sprinter Campervan Interior

This luxury campervan’s interior design aesthetic seamlessly blends modern rustic elegance with a contemporary lodge style.

The interplay of warm wood accents paired with bold colours and modern design elements, creates a chic yet cosy home from home vibe.

The natural accents, such as the live edge upstand – a signature feature of Brown Bird & Co’s conversions – copper lighting, and sleek, contemporary fixtures, make this campervan ruggedly inviting and oh-so-eminently stylish.

Van Conversion Layout

This is a closed bulkhead conversion (with open access to the cab), so moving from front to back, we’ve got spacious lounge area with sofa-style seating. Then there’s a galley-style, walk-through kitchen, with countertop extension. Mid-van there’s a shower room with toilet. The comfortable sleeping area features an east-to-west fixed bed, with garage storage beneath.

Seating & Sleeping

The seating and sleeping arrangements in Munro are thoughtfully designed to create a comfortable living space.

At the heart of the living area is a spacious, sofa-style corner seating setup. This space doubles as a convenient storage solution, with ample compartments beneath the seating to stow away essentials.

Transitioning towards the rear, Munro features a fixed bed positioned widthways, ensuring a restful night’s sleep with minimal setup required. Thanks to the addition of a side pod (with window and bug net), the bed is 194cm long (6ft 3″). This bed is elevated to provide generous garage storage beneath, perfect for housing larger items or adventure gear.

Storage

Munro’s storage space solutions are expertly designed to ensure a clutter-free and organised living space. The van’s interior features multiple built-in cabinets and drawers in the kitchen area, providing ample storage space for kitchen essentials. These sleek, black cabinetry units not only add to the overall aesthetic but also maximise the available space efficiently.

The elevated bed creates a under-bed storage area, with plenty of space to stash any larger items and adventure gear. Overhead, storage compartments above the bed make the most of vertical space without compromising on style.

The thoughtfully designed garage storage at the rear of the van provides an accessible and spacious area for bulkier items.

One aspect we’d like to bring to your attention are the Van Der Moon rear door storage panels. With all their pockets and pouches, these are nothing short of storage wizardry.

The cab and overhead compartments both have oak slab doors, knurled brass door handles, soft close hinges and heavy duty magnets.

Interior Lighting

Munro’s interior lighting design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the van.

It’s hard to find lighting as stylish as this; that’s because Brown Bird & Co‘s copper and oak lighting designs are handmade! We love the strategically placed copper spotlights along the ceiling; these are designed to provide focused illumination, and great task lighting, while wall lights – made from copper pipe – enhance the overall ambiance.

Heating

A Truma Combi system provides both heating and hot water, utilising diesel and electric power. The heater is can be easily managed through a digital control panel or a mobile app.

When in heating mode, the beauty of a Truma Combi system is that it not only warms the interior, but also supplies hot water, with a boost function available for extended showers.

The system supplies instant hot water – perfect for washing dishes etc.

What are the advantages of converting a Mercedes Sprinter
van into a camper?

The Mercedes Sprinter van is known for its reliability, spacious interior, and strong engine performance.

The Mercedes Benz Sprinter offers a high roof option, ample cargo space, and is available in various lengths, making it a versatile base for campervan conversions and luxury motorhomes.

Are there any common issues to watch out for with Mercedes Sprinter campervans?

Common issues can include rust, especially in older models, and maintenance of the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) system in newer diesel models. Regular maintenance and inspections can help mitigate these issues.

What are the benefits of fitting 5-tonne leaf springs to a Sprinter camper van?

There are many benefits, including:

Increased Payload and Adaptability: The primary benefit is the enhanced ability to carry heavier loads – up to 5 tonnes. While Brown Bird & Co have ensured that the conversion can be driven away with an unladen weight of 3140KG (360KG under the max Gross Vehicle Weight – GVW – of 3.5 tonnes), the springs mean there is scope to up-plate the van in the future (up to 5 tonnes) to carry more weight, if desired. Note: to drive a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes in the UK, you must have the C1 category on your driving license.

Improved Stability, Handling, and Safety: The van can handle heavy loads more efficiently, reducing the risk of overloading, maintaining stability on the road, and absorning the impact of bumps in the road!

Better Suspension: 5-tonne leaf springs provide a more robust suspension system, leading to a smoother ride, even on rough terrains. This is particularly beneficial for off-road adventures or uneven surfaces.

Enhanced Durability: These springs are designed to handle higher stress and strain, making them less prone to wear and tear over time. By upgrading to 5-tonne leaf springs, Brown Bird & Co have enhanced the overall lifespan of the van’s suspension system, reducing the frequency of maintenance and replacements.

Overall, upgrading to 5-tonne leaf springs enhances the performance, safety, and durability of a Sprinter camper van, making it better equipped for both everyday use and adventurous travels.

No AWD is a deal breaker. Size of bed? Winter ready?

    1. Helen Laing says:

Hey! The fixed rear bed is 135cm x194cm double bed with memory foam topped mattress.

Scores high in terms of being winter-ready, these guys use professional spray foam insulation or traditional building insulation such as Celotex 25 and 50mm foam board, spray foam in the tricky to reach spots, recycled loft insulation, silver bubble wrap, thermoliner and aluminium tape to create a vapour barrier. It’s also fitted with a Truma Combi Diesel/Electric Heater, but underslung utilities would need to be winterized.

In terms of the AWD… we’d love it to be that too! The combination of KO2 Goodrich All Terrain Tyres and the 5 Tonne Leaf Springs on the front and back will make it a nice ride over bumpy terrain, but doesn’t beat AWD!

    2. Charles says:

I like the interior layout and overall design features of the van but for those who want to use their sprinter in the real world and off grid why not have a Thule Awning and at least a 400 ah lithium battery. I find that if I run my normal power systems (frig, lights, tv etc ) and my AC on auto my batteries use about 40 to 50% of juice on my 420 ah battery overnight. The awning is used 90% of the time alone with my big led night light. Btw having 4wd on a sprinter is just a absolute even if it is just a mall crawler for that poser look…lol

      1. Helen Laing says:

Hey! Thanks for your comment! Yeah…it’s a shame that Mercedes don’t produce a 4WD Sprinter any longer…just the AWD. However, this would be an upgrade for sure. In terms of the battery size, there’s no A/C as this van was produced for the UK market and – it sucks – but very little need for A/C over the pond, so the power consumption is not as intensive. That said, personally, I’m just about to upgrade my battery to a 460Ah Lithium from Roamer, because it is such a strong choice.

One other thing that sucks about vanlife in the UK compared to the US – this van is limited to 3.5T GVW. In the US, this would be increased. Hence, decisions like heavier batteries and awnings will reduce the payload (360KG was spare on this van after the build – not that much for people and travel gear). I guess something had to give!
